Starting DiscoverWare is easy! Just insert the DiscoverWare CD in your CD-ROM drive. The Autoplay feature of Windows 95 will automatically start DiscoverWare.
To start again after that, with the DiscoverWare CD in the CD-ROM drive, simply double-click the DiscoverWare icon. Or, if you've chosen to install a shortcut to DiscoverWare on your desktop, you can double-click that icon. It's as easy as that!
REMOVING DISCOVERWARE
To remove all traces of DiscoverWare, you should run the uninstall program. Go to the Control Panel and open Add/Remove Programs. Then, choose the DiscoverWare application to be removed, and click the Add/Remove button.
OPTIMIZING YOUR SYSTEM
To optimize your system for maximum performance, do the following:
- Click the 'Start' button, choose 'Settings', then 'Control Panel'.
- In the Control Panel, double-click 'System' then click the 'Performance' tab to display the advanced settings.
- Choose 'File System' then click the 'CD-ROM' tab. Set the 'Supplemental cache size' to 'Large' then click 'OK'.
- If you have an accelerator card choose 'Graphics'. Make sure 'Hardware acceleration' is set to 'Full' then click 'OK'.
- Click 'Virtual Memory'. Make sure that Windows is managing the virtual memory settings then click 'OK'.
- Click 'OK' to close the System Properties dialog box.
- Close the 'Control Panel' dialog box when you're done.
NO SOUND
If you don’t hear the audio portion of the CD-ROM and you’ve properly installed the sound card drivers, check the volume level of the 'Wave' setting in the Volume Control panel.
OUT OF MEMORY
DiscoverWare uses your computer's memory to display pictures and sound. More free memory gives better performance. If you get Out-Of-Memory errors, you should try the following:
- Close all unnecessary applications. Applications sitting idle in the background are taking up valuable system resources.
- Don't use wallpaper. An image used for wallpaper in Windows resides in memory even when it isn't being displayed.
VIDEO DISPLAY DRIVERS
Video performance depends on the right combination of video card and video display driver. Microsoft includes generic SVGA drivers with Windows to give general SVGA compatibility with most video cards.
Unfortunately, these drivers are slow because they’re designed to be compatible with many different cards. The Windows display drivers provided by your video card manufacturer are optimized to run Windows with your video card. You’ll see improved performance if you use the drivers specific for your video card.
To install the correct driver, do the following:
- Right-click the desktop to see the shortcut menu.
- Choose 'Properties' to display the properties dialog box and click the 'Settings' tab.
- Click 'Change Display Type' to find a match for your adapter and screen type. Refer to your video card owner's manual for the correct driver name.
- Set the 'Color palette' to '256 Color' or 'High Color (16 bit)'.
- Video performance will also be improved by setting 'Desktop area' to 640 by 480.
- Click 'OK' when you're done.
Network Installation
This file describes the procedures for installing DiscoverWare onto
a network drive, whether you’re running Novell Netware or Windows
NT. A further procedure describes DiscoverWare installation on a user
workstation.
INSTALLING IN NOVELL NETWARE
Before you can install DiscoverWare onto a user workstation running on a Netware Network, you need to do the following:
- Run "install /n" from the DiscoverWare CD. This will copy all files and directories from the DiscoverWare CD into the desired directory on the server - keeping the same directory structure. Any directory or sub-directory can be used, but the directory should be dedicated to one DiscoverWare product. Also, note that long filenames are not admissible and that the total path name must not exceed 60 characters.
- Set the file flags to shareable and read-only.
INSTALLING IN WINDOWS NT
Before you can install DiscoverWare onto a user workstation running on a Windows NT LAN, you need to do the following:
- Run "install /n" from the DiscoverWare CD. This will copy all files and directories from the DiscoverWare CD into the desired directory on the server - keeping the same directory structure. Any directory or sub-directory can be used, but the directory should be dedicated to one DiscoverWare product. Also, note that long filenames are not admissible and that the total path name must not exceed 60 characters.
- Set the file & directory rights to read.
USER WORKSTATION INSTALLATION
To install DiscoverWare on a user workstation, do the following:
- Run “install.exe” from the network directory where the DiscoverWare files have been copied.
- During installation, make sure you select the network support option, when presented in a dialog box. The installation program will then copy DiscoverWare core files onto the local hard disk and make note of the network path for all external files.
- When starting the program for the first time, you’ll be required to enter a password. Passwords are case sensitive. At any time, if the path to the external file changes, you may be required to enter that path. The maximum length for the path is 60 characters, and long filenames are not permitted.
REMOVING DISCOVERWARE
To remove all traces of DiscoverWare, you should run the uninstall program. In Windows 3.x or Windows NT 3.51, an uninstall icon should be available in the same group as the application icon. In Windows 95 or Windows NT 4.0, go to the Control Panel and open Add/Remove Programs. Then, choose the DiscoverWare application to be removed, and click the Add/Remove button.
RE-INSTALLING DISCOVERWARE
If you want to change the nature of your DiscoverWare installation, whether it’s from a network or from a local CD-ROM drive, you’ll need to re-install DiscoverWare. You do not need to remove DiscoverWare first. Follow the standard instructions to initiate the installation.
BOOKMARKS/USER TRACKING
For every user that logs in to a DiscoverWare product, a text file (*.txt) is created. This file can be found in the "Users" folder, a sub-folder of the application folder. These files are used to keep track of which categories and topics have been completed. It also contains the user name, and the last date and time that the user accessed the product. Here is part of an example of a text file called "Souciala.txt":
[USER NAME]
Alain Soucie
[DATE & TIME]
Thursday, June 12, 1997
10:58:48 AM
[CURRENT CATEGORY]
CurrentCat=3
[CATEGORY 00]
Cat0Top0=0
Cat0Top1=1
A text file by the same name, but with a ".dwt" extension also gets created as soon as a user completes any test within the product. The file contains the title of the test category, the date, and the test score. Every time the user completes a test, the results get appended to this file. Here is an example of "Souciala.dwt":
[More Outlook Features]
Date=6/27/97
Score=13/20
Percent=65%
[Global Test]
Date=6/27/97
Score=7/43
Percent=16%
